AHIMA Spotlight

Meet Rebecca Millar

Rebecca Millar brings something a little different to the health information community. With a background in nursing and credentials spanning clinical documentation integrity and coding, she sees the profession from multiple angles and is not shy about sharing what she has learned along the way. Currently serving as President of the Oregon Health Information Management Association (OrHIMA) and a proud AHIMA member, Becca is an active voice for the profession at the state level and a strong advocate for the next generation of HI professionals. We sat down with her to talk about where HI is heading, what keeps her energized, and the advice she wishes more emerging professionals would take to heart.

What do you see as the most significant challenges and opportunities in health information today?

Of course, one of the most significant challenges is keeping up with how quickly healthcare and technology are evolving. From AI to regulations, HI professionals are being asked to take on so much more while simultaneously maintaining accuracy and integrity. At the same time, however, it is an exciting opportunity to be in a profession that plays such a pivotal role in healthcare. There is always something new to learn, and you will never be bored!

Looking ahead, what actions do you plan to take in your role at AHIMA to make the greatest impact on healthcare and patient care?

I hope to continue supporting education, mentorship, collaboration, and professional development opportunities that empower both current and future HI professionals. One of the greatest characteristics of our community is how willing people are to share knowledge and help each other grow. I also want to continue advocating for strong documentation and data integrity practices that directly support patient safety, quality reporting, reimbursement accuracy, and ultimately better patient outcomes.

What advice would you give HI students and emerging professionals to help them thrive and advance in the profession?

Be curious, ask questions, and do not underestimate the value of networking! I highly recommend HI students and emerging professionals get involved with AHIMA and their component associations early in their careers. Networking, volunteering, and mentorship opportunities can open doors and create connections that may shape your career.

Is there anything else you'd like to share with our AHIMA community?

Gratitude. There is something truly unique about the AHIMA community because of the wonderful people who are part of it. It is filled with incredibly knowledgeable, supportive, and genuinely fun professionals. I feel so fortunate to have met so many amazing people who are passionate about advancing the profession and that demonstrate the value that HI professionals bring to healthcare every day.
